Independent Study
Many traditional colleges and universities require only
one academic year, or less, on campus. The first three
years can be earned by independent study, or
correspondence study, or equivalency exam (although most
schools have limits on the amount they will accept).
Vineyard University has a flexible degree program. Most
well-established degree programs grant credit for a
variety of learning experiences. In terms of cost and
arrangements required, equivalency examinations and
independent study projects are the most expedient.
Credit for life experience learning is another option
sometimes offered.
A better approach to independent study would be for the
student to envision a subject area which is to be
studied for 9 to 12 credits. As an independent study
project, the student identifies what topics are germane
to the area (e.g., probability theory, descriptive
statistics, inferential statistics), at what level of
comprehension (e.g., introductory through intermediate
or advanced); how the topic is to be studied (e.g.,
directed reading, programmed textbook), and how the
competencies acquired are to be demonstrated (e.g., oral
examination, proctored examination including problem
solving). This way, a single independent study project
can take the place of a series of successive courses in
a given area (e.g., statistics 101, 201, 302).
Independent study projects should form the balance of
any study plan. With the topical areas, learning
objectives, and learning materials identified, and
independent study project allows the student to remain
with the same instructor(s) from an introductory through
an intermediate or advanced level of study. This
eliminates the need for new arrangements to be made
every two to four credits. An independent study project
can take the form of simple directed reading, tutorial
instruction, practicum work, or a combination of these
methods, culminating in the final product.
Independent study projects require the aid of qualified
persons to act as community faculty, and to oversee
personally the progress of the work. Therefore, it is
highly advantageous to line up faculty in advance of
entering the degree program, and to have alternates
available in the event an instructor is unable, for any
reason, to fulfill his or her commitment.
VU offers a student the opportunity to extend and to
explore intellectual independence. The following
criteria are among those used to decide a student's
eligibility:
- The student must be in
academic good standing with a 2.0 grade point
average.
- The title and outline of the
independent study project must be agreed upon by the
student, the instructor and the chairperson of the
department.
- Application forms for
independent study have to be completed and approved
by the University.
